Typographic Illustration & Magazine Spread Rationalé
Design Objective: Design a 2-page opening spread of a featured article for Time Magazine.*
The client is Time Magazine, located in New York, New York. Part of their mission states “...we continue to adapt and innovate, making sure our products are relevant and appealing to the busy consumer who needs to know—but also wants to be inspired by—what’s going on in the world.”
The audience is readers of Time Magazine which are men and women with an average age of 50 who have a median household income of approximately $75,000. The purpose of the article is to entertain the audience and inform them about the opioid epidemic in the United States. The typographic portrait is the focal point of the spread.
Design Solution: The artwork includes a photograph of Nikki Sixx with hand drawn words and phrases related to the opioid epidemic in the United States behind and along the side of the photograph. This artwork appeals to the audience because the artwork’s visual flow triggers an emotional response of unease and concern. The hand lettering in the illustration offers balance and emphasis with different styles and boldness throughout the composition. The chosen serif and sans serif fonts appeal to the audience because it is on brand with Time Magazine. Staying true to Time, the alignment of the article is justified with last line aligned left. The visual hierarchy of the article is established using size and color.
